A message for the new mums and the mums to be in 2023…

The new year always feels like a time for reflection and hope. This is never more the case than when you’re expecting a baby.

Perhaps if it’s your first baby, you’re excited about the way your life is about to change. Hopefully the thought of having a gorgeous-smelling squidgy baby in your arms, is outweighing feeling terrified. If you’re growing your brood, you might be wondering how you’ll divide your time and attention further. Something to remember as you navigate this new world, is that new babies are likely to create changes, and there will be ups and downs along the way. Here are some ways that might help your growing family…

Get Organised

Get the freezer packed full of dinners, to take something off your to do list once the baby arrives. You could also freeze cookies or cake, for when you need an energy hit. If you have toddlers or older children, it’s a great activity for a rainy day.

Wash baby clothes before your little one arrives, so everything is ready to go.

The NHS website suggests that you should pack your hospital bag at least three weeks before your due date.

Seek Help

If you can, join a pre-natal group for NCT or hypnobirthing or yoga, it’s a great way to start to make a network of friends who can support you once the baby arrives. For post-natal networks, there are baby groups, mother and toddler groups as well as breastfeeding support groups that you could attend that will encourage you to leave the house and meet new people. Ask your midwife if they can let you know what’s available in your area.

Let Go

Maybe you have expectations of your baby’s birth, how the early days should go, how you should feel, how you should behave. Try to allow yourself to listen to how you’re feeling in the moment and respond accordingly.

Perhaps you're starting to wonder if you'll have time for the things you love, but over time, things will fit together.

Seemingly, it’s natural to look at what other people are doing, but remind yourself that everyone is different and having their own ups and downs.

Finally…

The Happy Song is never a bad idea for new babies and unsure toddlers, really lifts the mood!

We’re rooting for you! We hope 2023 is a great one for you.
